I worked on this project during the Advanced Term at Think Tank Training Centre, where I focused primarily on creating a 3D hard surface asset. This piece is based on the original Boeing Stearman aircraft, a vintage biplane with a lot of character and mechanical detail. I gathered and reviewed a wide range of reference images from various angles, which helped me understand the construction of the aircraft and how each component fits and functions within the whole structure.
This was my first time creating a full hero prop asset, which presented several challenges. The complexity of the model required a high level of attention to both proportion and functionality, especially in areas like the engine, propeller, and the wings on how the are supposed to be integrated into the body of the plane. I had to carefully plan my modeling workflow, breaking the aircraft into logical sections and maintaining clean topology throughout. The process taught me how to approach a complex object step by step, and how important it is to stay organized and intentional in every stage of production.

For texturing, I chose to keep the look relatively simple but intentional. I created a custom material in Substance Painter to give the model a subtle sense of realism without overcomplicating the surface. Although this aircraft is often seen in its classic yellow paint scheme, I explored different historical variations and ultimately chose a combination of dark green and beige, which aligned with the visual tone I was aiming for. This gave the piece a more grounded, vintage feel. Something that felt more personal, as many of these aircraft were assembled from individual parts and often customized by their owners. I liked the idea that perhaps someone once restored or built this plane themselves, choosing these tones to give it a unique identity.
This project was a valuable learning experience that helped me develop stronger skills in modeling and maintaining clean, precise topology. More importantly, it gave me a clearer understanding of what it means to create production-ready assets with storytelling potential.
Reference Images (PureRef File)

Above are some of the image references I gathered to better understand the aircraft as a whole. Given the number of mechanical components, I focused on identifying how each part is assembled and how they interact with one another.
